Division Day at the Echo 10-02-07
Indie Mom and I were fortunate to be at Division Day's CD release party for Beartrap Island Tuesday night at the Echo in Los Angeles. I had never been to the Echo before, and we had a hard time finding the place. The only clue from the street, before the doors opened, was a plastic trash can labeled "Echo" near the curb. With help from a parking lot attendant, we finally located the door.
We saw Nikki, Bryan, and Joe from Silversun Pickups in the audience. Tim Hutton, bassist for opening band Eulogies, told me that members of Film School were also there.
The stars of the evening, Division Day began their set on the cramped stage with the low-key "Littleblood" and followed with the rapid-fire "Ricky," a new song from the official-release. Next was "Malachite," then "Colorguard," which showcases vocalist/keyboardist Rohner Segnitz's beautiful organ. They stuck to the faster-paced numbers, keeping the celebratory momentum up, with "To the Woods," "Catch Your Death," the moody "Hurricane," and "Tigers." "Wings and Bones" was the only number from their previous EP The Mean Way In. The set ended with the lovely "Reversible."
Division Day:
Rohner Segnitz
Seb Bailey
Ryan Wilson
Segnitz, bassist Seb Bailey, and guitarist Ryan Wilson give the band a rather serious persona onstage, while behind them drummer Kevin Lenhart is anything but serious, gleefully banging away, making the funniest faces, and obviously having a blast. At the end of the show, you could have wrung a bucket of sweat out of his white T-shirt, and he was still grinning. He is really fun to watch!
Kevin Lenhart
The highlight of my evening was getting to meet Division Day's guitarist Ryan Wilson, who has been kind enough to correspond with me and answer lots of questions.
