Elbow at the Avalon 05.09.08

Grounds for Divorce

Drummer Richard Jupp and bassist Pete Turner

Violinists

The fog obscures some of the frenetic energy that the band brings to their live show, but it could not mask the fact that Elbow, especially Guy Garvey, performed one of the best concerts I have ever seen. Garvey asked the audience repeatedly if we were having a good time - and it was obvious that he truly was concerned. His stage presence and banter were real, not forced, which is the mark of an established band, comfortable with themselves and with the quality of their performance. Along with the rest of the audience, I wanted the night to go on forever. If you have the opportunity to see Elbow live, take it.

Setlist:
1. Starlings
2. The Bones of You ("a song about massive regret, much too late")
3. Leaders of the Free World
4. Great Expectations
5. Mirrorball [live acoustic]
6. Grounds For Divorce
7. Mexican Standoff
8. Forgive Myself
9. Friend Of Ours
10. The Stops
11. Newborn
12. On a Day Like This

Encore
13. Station Approach
14. Grace Under Pressure
15. Scattered Black and Whites

Yes, you were right (but I never doubted you). I wished they had played more of the older stuff, but I greatly enjoyed what they did play, and made me want to give their new stuff more of a listen. Great show - thanks again for the recommendation!

Hey, I see myself in a couple of your pictures in the front row. I'm glad you got to catch one of my all-time favorite bands in action!

Hey, thanks, Ed! I've always wanted to see a comment like yours come up after I've taken photos of the audience! That's so cool! Will you be at any of our other concerts too?

I gotta say, that Guy Garvey likes to POINT!

Oh ladies, so glad you enjoyed them. They're playing London soonish, supported by Fleet Foxes. Am going to try hard to be there.

Happy Friday X

Fleet Foxes! One of my favorite solo artists, J. Tillman, joined Fleet Foxes for that tour recently. He's playing drums.

Off to see Fleet Foxes next month on a double headliner with Beach House in a tiny little venue. Will keep my eye out for J Tillman - hopefully I'll recognise him behind all that hair - I'll grill him about Cancer and Delirium!

Looks like the only upcoming show we have in common is Radiohead at the Bowl (I'm also going to Lollapalooza to see them. But I see that I was also at the Colin Meloy and Tokyo Police Club shows, plus Coachella, of course.

Ed, we're adding shows all the time. What upcoming shows are you seeing?

I have Robyn, Destroyer, The Kills, Mates of State, and R.E.M./Modest Mouse/The National this month. Right now my only June show is Aimee Mann at the new Largo on June 10. Then Lollapalooza in Chicago in August, followed by Radiohead, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, My Morning Jacket, and My Bloody Valentine. I'll be attempting to get Hot Chip tickets (at the Wiltern) when they go on sale next week.

We've been talking about going to see Aimee Mann at Largo since we saw her Xmas show. I really want to see MMJ, and as I mentioned in the FF post above, I'm going to try to see Hot Chip at the Wiltern too, but they aren't Alt-gramma's thing. We'll add more shows as they come up in the summer, I'm sure.

I just bought tix for MMJ at the Greek! See you there!
