Finally Friday

So, here we are at the end of another week. Indie Mom even cheated death twice, successfully taking two plane rides. In celebration, I have a few unusual covers.

Mark Kozelek is the master of covers, in my opinion. This one is typically lovely.
Red House Painters: Follow You, Follow Me (Genesis)

This seemingly odd pairing actually comes off quite well. It's different to hear the Hermits playing in a minor key.
Herman's Hermits: White Wedding (Billy Idol)

Rachel Haden is the triplet sister of Petra Haden (formerly the Decemberists, now a solo artist) and Tanya Haden (Let's Go Sailing)
Rachel Haden: Poems, Prayers, and Promises (John Denver)

See Time Travel Tuesday: Countdown to Ecstasy, for info about the original release of this song.
Rickie Lee Jones: Show Biz Kids (Steely Dan)

Colin Meloy is another master of covers, and we're seeing him with the Decemberists tomorrow at the Hollywood Bowl! Mr. Folkie just bought us a new camera, and I hope to get some neat photos.
The Decemberists: Human Behavior (Björk)

Check out Contrast Podcast #66, where the subject is Elvis, but !surprise! there are no songs BY Elvis in the podcast. Here, however, is a punky cover by the Cramps.
The Cramps: Heartbreak Hotel (Elvis Presley)

This song by Rickie Lee Jones was my contribution to Contrast Podcast #66. Marcy at Lost In Your Inbox suggested the theme and provided a gorgeous song by Gillian Welch, "Elvis Presley Blues." Also in the podcast are songs by Warren Zevon and Elvis Costello, as well as the always hilarious "Elvis Is Everywhere" by Mojo Nixon. It's a really excellent mix.
Rickie Lee Jones: Elvis Cadillac from Sermon on Exposition Boulevard (2007)

That's all for today because...um...I have to get going on some other stuff--lame excuse, but true. Happy weekend, everyone!

those look like some terrific covers--the red house painters and decemberists and ricki lee especially. i agree with you about mark kozelek. i loved sun kil moon's tiny cities made of ashes, whereas others totally hated it. but he hears things in songs that no one else seems to and then make them into his own. very cool.

hope you have a blast at the show and get some great pics! can't wait to hear all about it. : )

I liked SOME of Tiny Cities. I'm not a big Modest Mouse fan, but even so I liked several of Mark's arrangements.
