Time Travel Tuesday: Tank Girl Soundtrack, 1995

We can't let Tuesday pass by without a bit of time-traveling, so here we go back to ever-popular 1995.

The film Tank Girl, based on the main character from a punk art British graphic novel of the same name was not that great a movie by anyone's standards and certainly not in the eyes of creators jamie hewlett and Alan Martin. The writing was terrible (not Hewlett's fault), and while I like Lori Petty, she was too dolled-up for the character (see real Tank Girl from Deadline, Sept. 1993), and she didn't have the chops to carry a feature film. Very interesting though, is young Naomi Watts as Jet Girl.

The movie did, however, have a pretty cool soundtrack. Believe it or not, the music coordinator was Courtney Love-Cobain, back when she was at least partly sane. "Let's Do It" is my favorite of Joan Jett's work. I was already listening to Bush, Belly, and Veruca Salt, but "Roads" was my first introduction to Portishead. This CD also had the first song I'd heard by Bjork, "Army of Me."

So before you head out to the video store for a bit of post-apocalyptic Aussie nostalgia, how about getting in the mood with a few MP3s.

[MP3] Portishead: Roads

[MP3] Belly: Thief

[MP3] Bjork: Army of Me

[MP3] Devo: Girl U Want

[MP3] Joan Jett and Paul Westerberg: Let's Do It

Jamie Hewlett is now best-recognized as co-creator (with Damon Albarn) of the virtual band Gorillaz.

Bjork will be appearing at the 2007 Coachella music and arts festival

Very Cool! Although, I'm officially starting to feel old, because posts like this are making me nostalgic for my adolescence. Not that I blame you; it's inevitable really. So I might as well enjoy the great music while I still have my hearing!

Don't suppose you would post the Magnificent Bastards' Tank Girl soundtrack contribution, Mockingbird Girl, would you? Tried to find it on iTunes without success.

Many thanks!

Thanks for your comment! I guess the 90's were my 2nd adolescence. ;)

I really juggled with the choice of Mockingbird Girl or another cut and finally settled on these. I will sneak it into a later post, OK?

If you see me at a concert, I'm the one with cotton in her ears to try to preserve what hearing I have left. Cotton balls work better than ear plugs for this purpose.
