The Brunettes at the Wiltern

The Brunettes onstage at the Wiltern Theater
Here is a concert review that kind of fell by the wayside. Indie Mom and I saw the the Brunettes from Aukland, New Zealand, when they opened for Beirut at the Wiltern Theater on May 30. They are quite a crowd onstage, with six or seven members, but the main focus is on the duo of Jonathan Bree and Heather Mansfield.

Mansfield and Bree
The couple have been making music together since the late 90's. Their boy/girl melodrama pop is inspired by 70s New York punk and 60s girl groups but infused with garage rock 'n' roll. Mansfield is a flirty vixen and mistress of a number of instruments, including keyboards, clarinet, and harmonica. The overall impression is a lively, noisy, feel-good revival.
