Cool Christmas Caroling
We've heard these songs over and over since we were all little. We've heard all the versions: Bing Crosby, muzak, Barry Manilow, dog-bark, meows, country, polka, and digital bells. It's really tough to get us interested in them now. Sometimes the artists themselves don't sound very interested either. And although many of these seem like simple songs, they are easily done BADLY.
The versions below, however, are different, interesting, beautiful, AND well-done. Trust me; I'm PICKY. Even Indie Mom might like these.
This is a track from a brand new double album of live acoustic performances by Mark Kozelek. I'll be posting a few more of those in the future. It beats the Bingle/Bowie version by ten miles even though there are no drums in it.

How often have you heard lyrics to "Carol of the Bells"? You got 'em here, plus nice harmonies and guitar arrangement.

"O Holy Night" is a gorgeous song that demands a wide vocal range. Laura Weller of the Green Pajamas dips to the low notes with ease and doesn't strain at the high notes. You get the full chill-bump effect. This version also has a verse I have not heard before. I can't believe the Green Pajamas have been around for over 20 years and I'm just discovering them.

Sixpence None the Richer may have the most beautiful version of this lovely little carol that I know. Excellent arrangement.

"Away in a Manger" often comes off as listless and boring, but this rendition has members of Neutral Milk Hotel sitting in, giving it an odd but pleasant flavor that you can't ignore--like curry. You either like it or you don't.
