Cover Story: Backstreet and Spears

There is not much chance that you will ever see Brittney Spears and the Backstreet Boys mentioned again on Speed of Dark. We are generally not into that kind of music. But since both have been in the news so much lately, I was reminded of these neat cover songs that I have. The best thing is, both covers sound completely different from the originals. Thank heavens!

I actually first heard Limbeck perform "I Want It That Way" live in concert at the Glass House in Pomona. It took me totally by surprise. I didn't know the band at all, but somehow I knew all the words to the song they were playing. How could that be??? OMG, It's that song! I HATE that song! Nooooo....I LOVE that song! It's fantastic!

I met the band after the show and bought this EP. The guys quite frankly were sick of the song and didn't want to play it anymore, but it was such a crowd-pleaser! You could see the audience practically swoon when they played it.

The Spears cover was performed live for VHS Storytellers by Glaswegians Travis and published only as a B-side on the U.S. single for "Turn." Have I mentioned that we love Scottish bands? I separated the interview at the beginning of the track into a separate mp3 so we can enjoy the song alone, but be sure to listen to it. The interviewer actually asks, "Why did you choose to do the Brittney cover of that awful, awful song?" It's a funny story.

i don't know if you, like me, succumbed to the lure of rock on tv and watched the Rock Star: INXS show last year ... but Marty Casey, my favorite contestant, sang Baby hit me one more time in a very affecting and beautiful way. i downloaded it later off itunes, and listen to it regularly, although i would never listen to britney's version.

as for covers, no doubt you've heard radiohead do "nobody does it better." and have you also heard them doing "winter wonderland?" it cracks me up - thom as a lounge singer! you can find it on youtube and other places.

as you guys seem to be in LA, are you one of the lucky few who get to go to KROQ acoustic xmas? i am still hoping for tix, but probably won't score any. sigh.....

I didn't watch the INXS search because I have such a big love for Michael Hutchence, and I don't even want to hear "INXS" without him.

I've heard both the Radiohead songs you mentioned, and they are funny. Richard Cheese does a funny, lounge-style version of Creep.

I'm in L.A., and I've always wanted to go to the Acoustic Xmas, but I don't want to spend crazy money because there's rarely anyone playing there that I want to see that bad. If I won tix from the radio, I'd definitely go.

i can understand your love for michael hutchence. he was beautiful and had a wonderful voice. i don't think much of who they hired to replace him. certainly NOT as handsome!

i did the acoustic xmas last year and it was really great- even bands i didn't like were good. i would like to see the foo fighters and my chem romance the most this year. my son wants to see every single band playing.

Hey I know this is kind of late, but I was wondering if you could post the rest of that Limbeck EP? It would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hello. I am just wondering would there be any chance that you can re-post the introduction of Travis Storyteller from VH1? I (and many Travis fans) have been looking for this concert for many years, but it seems no one has managed to find a copy of the recording. If you can be so kind to re-post this it would be greatly appreciated. :)
