young galaxy
Alt-gramma and I were lucky enough to see an emerging band from the musical wonderland that is Montreal. The Young Galaxy opened up The Dears' show at the El Rey in Los Angeles last night (December 2, 2006). This was just the band's fourth time playing together, according to the co-lead singer, Stephen Ramsay. The other co-lead singer is Catherine McCandless, not Amy Millan (as previously reported here). Young Galaxy is signed to the Arts and Crafts record label, along with Stars, the Dears and Broken Social Scene, to name a few. I searched around the web a bit before posting this, and I see that Young Galaxy has already been featured on i heart music and brooklyn vegan earlier this year.
The music was seamless and really excellent. The band played really well together, looked like they were having fun, and sounded great. They were not very talkative, and alt-gramma thinks that at least one of the band members appeared to be nervous. The drummer was extremely energetic, tossing his long hair all over the place and thrashing the hell out of his drum kit. I was standing directly in front of Stephen Ramsay and we both noticed how much he looks like Mark Hamill from the Star Wars "IV" era.

Correction!
I have been informed that this is actually the wonderful Catherine McCandless. On the right is Stephen Ramsay. Together, they are the heart of Young Galaxy.

The show in Portland was great as well. I am really excited for these guys and gals! I am super excited to hear the full length when it comes out next year.
They are great live or recorded. Their nostalgic, romantic pop speaks to many. LOVE LOVE
