A Piece of What You Need is Teddy Thompson's fourth album, released June 17. He has worked with both of his famous parents, Richard and Linda Thompson, opening shows for Richard and singing on recordings for both. Besides having inherited a great voice that reminds me a little bit of Jackson Browne's, Teddy has a strong pop songwriting style similar to that of Rufus Wainwright, also the product of famous singing parents, for whom he opened a recent show in London. He can also sound a lot like Lyle Lovett, as on his 2007 album, Up Front and Down Low.
Thompson is currently touring, with a few dates in the U.S. but mostly in the U.K. Los Angeles readers should check his MySpace for updates--a show may be added in our area in September.
