Nakia and His Southern Cousins - ACL 2008

We still have some of Uncle T's reviews from Austin City Limits 2008. Uncle T has attended enough festivals to know that the thing to do is experience new acts. Several of the ones he has written up, I have never even heard of before, and that includes Nakia and His Southern Cousins from Day 3. More tomorrow!

Nakia and His Southern Cousins

Nakia

I saw bits and pieces of their set, which was very entertaining and sounded great. When I initially stuck my head in that stage area to check them out I did a double take when I saw the two Fresh Up Singers (dressed in black and white dresses) up there swaying to the music. They had a little routine going on with Nakia. This Austin-based band sounded pretty good, playing a mix of blues, rock and soul.

Unfortunately, I was in-and-out of this stage area getting water and food provisions in preparation for the next act (Mike Farris), so I didn't have much of a chance to watch them until nearly the end of the set. One song did catch my ear (“Broken Spoke”) near the end of the set, which prompted me to purchase it later via download. I’d love to see them again. The day before, Nakia did a little dancing onstage with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, when she recruited him from the VIP area for her song “How Do You Let A Good Man Down?”

The band: Nakia (lead vocals), Mac McNabb (guitar), Johnny V. (bass), Ed Jarusinky (drums), Derek Morris (keyboards), The Fresh Up Girls (Karla Manzur, Jessie England)

Set list included:
• Broken Spoke
• Playing the Cards
