One of the best things about having a music blog is that people will send you free music, CDs, band swag, all kinds of neat stuff. I always welcome the opportunity to listen to something new, so I love it when I find these types of goodies in my inbox.

Today I received an email from Ryan Carroll, the lead singer of the band Saturna. Saturna hails from Portland, Oregon and claims bands such as The Jesus and Mary Chain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Sonic Youth, and Slowdive, among others, as influences. I had the opportunity to check out their All Night EP, released in July 2006.

The song Blanket of Stars immediately reminded me of Catherine Wheel, a (now defunct) band I absolutely adore, with a similar driving, fuzzy guitar sound. The echo-y sounds on Chasing the Unpredictable sounded awesome in my headphones, and the lyric-free dreamyness of Springboard was excellent. After listening to all of the five songs on the EP, I'm hungry for more.

Saturna currently have a show coming up on December 22 at the Kenton Club, if you're lucky enough to live in Portland, OR. Hopefully soon they'll play in Los Angeles and I can go to a show. Check out their official website, their very own blog, and of course, their myspace page. Their All Night EP is available at iTunes and at Amazon.

from All Night EP:
saturna: blanket of stars
saturna: chasing the unpredictable
