Laura Gibson at the Music Box, 04-28-08

We have a large number (for us) of concerts coming up (see the sidebar), and we're already behind on posting about the ones we've seen, so I'm going to attempt a little catching-up today.
One of the really nice acts we saw recently was Laura Gibson, who opened for Colin Meloy at the Henry Fonda Music Box Theater on April 28. I found her wispy voice, gentle acoustic plucking, and folky style charming and sweet. Her highly entertaining stage patter displays an impish and whimsical side to to her mild demeanor, making her a real treat to see in person.
Most songs were from her 2006 CD If You Come To Greet Me, and one song, "All the Pretty Horses," was from Hush, her home-recorded EP of traditional folk and blues. She called it "a really pretty, kind of creepy lullaby," which is true. However, the first song she performed is not on either one of those albums, and I caught only some lyrics. We bought both CDs.
Setlist:
1. "Where have all your good words gone..."
2. Come By Storm (inspired by a view of the cemetery near her home)
3. Broken Bottle
4. Nightwatch ("The slowest waltz you've ever heard")
5. Hands In Pockets
6. Country, Country
7. All the Pretty Horses
8. The Longest Day
9. Sweet Deception
10.This Is Not the End
Listen to more at her session on Daytrotter from August 2007.
