Introducing City-State

I am starting to find out what artists and albums I missed in 2006 with the help of my new best friend, the MP3 player I received as a Christmas gift.

Just in case I am not the last person on the planet to have one, I can highly recommend the Creative Zen V player for those who don't want to shell out the bucks for a tony iPod. I don't find it a problem that I can't walk into any mini mart and find hundreds of pricey accessories for my little pet to play with like you can with iStuff. Compatible items for Zens are easy to order online.

Although I'm no technophobe, I'm obviously not lusting after an iPhone. And, no, Idolator, to my knowledge Speed of Dark did not get any free iPhones! If we did, we'd certainly be giving them away as prizes to our valued readers (see comment).

During my after-Christmas vacation, City-State, a foursome from Washington D.C., became a quick favorite on my Evaluation playlist with "Wolves." It turns out that the other four songs on their EP, aptly titled Wolves + 4, are darn good listening too--a little bit like Interpol or British Sea Power, with dark melodies and strong vocals. There's a lot of promise in these tracks.

Despite losing one of their founding band members (Matt Kalinowski, apparently on amicable terms) in 2006 and training his replacement (Forrest Yingling) on guitar, vocals, and keyboards, City-State expects to have a new release early this year, according to their MySpace page. I'll be looking forward to it.
