spotlight on the graduate

Another new band next in line to hit the big time is The Graduate, coming to you courtesy of Illinois. The band, consisting of lead singer Corey Warning, guitarists Matt Kennedy and Max Sauer, bassist Jared Wuestenberg, and drummer Tim Moore released the excellent EP Horror Show in April 2006, and plan to follow up with their first full-length release tentatively titled Anhedonia in April 2007. They've scheduled a killer tour for the spring, launching off in the middle of January.

I first heard The Graduate via myspace, and I really enjoyed the four songs they have posted there. But when I bought the EP, I listened to it repeatedly (as I do with new music) and I found myself toe-tapping and head-nodding and hitting the back button to listen to it again. The songs are arranged very well, the lyrics intelligent, and the sound excellent. The band lists their influences as U2, Third Eye Blind, Mute Math, Coldplay, and Death Cab for Cutie, which are some tough acts to follow. However, I think this band has potential and I am definitely looking forward to their album this spring. My favorite track from the EP:

the graduate: confidence is everything

The Grad rocks. They rock hard. I went to their first show. I'm lucky that their singer and bass player hail from my city. Surely big things are in store for The Grad this year.
